Norway’s Arctic Isles

Join us on a spring splitboard trip at seventy degrees north and experience touring in one of the most beautiful splitboard destinations in the world. This guided splitboard Norway adventure takes place high above the Arctic Circle, where remote islands, quiet valleys and reliable snow create the perfect setting for an unforgettable week.

Our Splitboard Norway sessions are the opposite of the busy touring zones around Tromso and Lofoten. Instead, we focus on the quieter islands of Kågen, Uløya and Arnøya, linked to the mainland by boat or undersea tunnels. These islands offer outstanding terrain for splitboarding in Norway, from open powder fields to long undulating runs and steep couloirs. You will ride from summit to sea with panoramic views in every direction.

There are no lifts here. Every turn is earned, but because you begin each ascent at sea level, the climbs feel noticeably easier than touring at altitude. The views will take your breath away long before the effort does.

The Programme

On arrival at Tromso airport we will make the 3.5 hour transfer north to Hamneidet. The next 6 days will be spent searching for the best splitboard touring and freeriding in some of the most beautiful zones on the planet. In the land of the midnight sun the weather is changeable, we may choose to start early or later in the day depending on what the meteo is doing. Sunset is around 11pm and sunrise is around 3:30am so there is scope for ensuring the best conditions.

Fitness & Ability

A typical day will involve an ascent of 1000+ vertical metres carrying a pack that will include all of your backcountry access equipment. We set a pace that will make between 300 – 350 vertical meters of ascent per hour. Even though splitboarding up from sea level is a little easier you should still have an excellent level of physical fitness.

You will be comfortable in riding pitches of up to 35 degrees in all types of snow conditions unassisted. For steeper pitches over 35 degrees, if you are not confident we can safely manage your descent using ropes.

Each day you will need to carry splitboard crampons, boot crampons, harness and an ice axe, even though they may not be used. You should also be able to make timely equipment transitions.

The ascents may involve long side-hill traverses and having to make kick turns on steeper gradients. You should already be confident with both of these techniques.

Payment Policy: A deposit of €795 is required immediately upon booking your session with The Rider Social. The balance of your trip costs are due 6 weeks before the course start date. Failure to meet the payment deadline 6 weeks before the start date will forfeit your place on that session without refund.

Cancellation policy: For cancellations made up to 6 weeks before the course start date, 0% of the ‘deposit’ amount paid will be refunded. For cancellations occurring within 6 weeks of the course start date no refund payments will be made. If cancelling a course within 6 weeks of the course start date, payments made cannot be refunded, carried forward or moved to another course.

Refund policy: The Rider Social is not liable for refunds or compensation due to late arrival, failure to attend or complete a course due to injury or illness, travel restrictions, resort closure, adverse weather conditions, force majeure or any other causes or conditions outside the control of The Rider Social

Covid-19: In the event that you can’t attend your session due to Covid-19 associated travel and holiday disruptions including (but not exclusive to) resort closure, FCO imposed travel restrictions, airline train or ferry travel bans imposed by International or local governments, a total refund of the balance paid, minus the non refundable deposit amount, will be refunded to you (the client).

In the event that you can’t attend your course due to you, (the client) being personally affected by the Covid-19 virus (including illness, inability to travel due to illness or any other personal restrictions affecting your travel) The Rider Social will not be liable to refund any monies (as stated in the refund policy above). It is strongly recommended that you have adequate personal insurance for illness, personal cancellation and personal travel disruption.

Upon booking any advertised session of any duration with The Rider Social you are in agreement of the Payment & Cancellations policies listed above.

Destination Hamneidet

Hamneidet is a small fishing commune situated in the Skjervøy municipality, a 3-hour drive north of Tromsø. This far north location offers up almost guaranteed splitboard touring routes on the surrounding islands well into the summer months.

It is the perfect base to explore these arctic isles from, it has easy access to the local ferry services that link the islands to the mainland, on which we’re based, allowing us to tailor each day’s splitboarding itinerary according to the weather. We will move accordingly to wherever it will be best over the course of the trip.

The Accommodation

Our home for the week is in a traditional Norwegian lodge, sat on the edge of a beautiful fjord facing the island of Kågen, owned by our accommodation partners (Ole and Heike). The house has 2 double bedrooms on the first floor and a mezzanine level that can sleep another 6 people. The lounge and dining areas are open and comfortable allowing everyone space to spread out, kick back and relax.

After a full day of touring and riding you can step down from the house to the beach to enjoy a wood fired sauna session, sooth your tired legs and take in the incredible arctic sunset. Maybe take a refreshing dip in the sea after to cool down, if you’re brave enough!

The Norway Splitboarding Experience

There is a wealth of options to ride here, on many different aspects, for all levels of snowboarders. All of the touring routes show off the incredible views that Norway is famous for, and we will make summit to sea descents on most days of the trip.

We will expect to make around 1200m of vertical ascent per day, so your fitness level will allow for this. Starting at sea level each day helps a lot; a Norwegian 1200m ascent isn’t anywhere near as physically demanding as it would be here in the Alps at a higher altitude.

In fact, the only truly breathtaking thing you’ll find about it will be the views.

All groups will get to ride from summit to sea, taking in the classic panoramas that Norway is famous for on the way up and down. The varied terrain on offer includes open powder fields and long undulating runs. For more advanced groups there are several summit couloirs on offer that we’ll ride, conditions dependent.

Who are the guides?

Lead Guide: UIAGM Paul ‘Polo’ Verdier

Polo is a French born UIAGM (IMFGA) splitboard guide from Evian Les Bains. He is supported by Jones Snowboards and Spark R&D, and has helped with the safety day training courses for the Jones European Pro Team athletes on their early season safety shred days, here in the Alps.

Tour Manager & Guide Assist: Paul Shirley

Paul is there to ensure smooth running of the trip, from arrival to departure. He’ll also be the group’s back-marker when on the mountain and in charge of the accommodation and meals.

A Splitboard Norway trip is for 5 clients maximum per session. This way we can move faster as a group, and it opens up access to more interesting and safely UIAGM managed terrain. You will get to ride bigger and better lines than if you are in a group of 6 or 8 people, and that’s a stone-cold fact.

How good do I need to be to Splitboard in Norway?

You’ll already have a least 1 week’s splitboarding experience. We don’t race up on the ascents, and we can help you to improve on any techniques that need it, like making a solid kick turn. We also ensure the descents are suitable for your individual level.
