Backcountry Hut
This 4 Day Backcountry Hut Trip takes you deeper into the Alps on a search for the best snow conditions. We will only decide on the exact hut location on the morning of the trip, so we’ll have the best possible chance of finding you cold snow to ride.
All the huts we use are fairly modern and always comfortable. By staying in the same place for a few days we can focus on the touring, straight from the hut door.
We can choose from a network of huts spanning across France, Italy and Switzerland and, because the hut network is huge, we can always select a location that suits the weather. If the sun is out, we go higher into big alpine terrain. However, if the weather turns, we move to a lower hut where the visibility and tree cover give us safer riding options.
The trip begins in the Abondance Valley. We pick you up from your accommodation and drive to the area offering the best conditions. It might be a three-hour journey into Italy or a shorter drive toward Chamonix. From there, we splitboard up to the hut. Most approaches involve between 600 and 1000 metres of ascent. After settling in, we head back out for a short tour involving an avalanche and transceiver refresher course.
We will stay in the same hut for two or three nights depending on group level. Newer groups warm up for a day in the Abondance Valley before moving into hut terrain. More experienced splitboarders can head straight into the mountains for a longer stay. This structure helps us keep the group safe while giving everyone the right level of challenge.
